Achievements of Prof M.M.Chengappa

M.M. Chengappa is Professor and Head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology and Interim Director of the Food Animal Health and Management Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Administratively, this department encompasses over 100 faculty, residents and staff members. 


His research interests include studying and understanding the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and developing strategies to protect animals from these diseases. He researches identification, molecular characterization and functional analysis of antigen/toxins of Streptococcus suis, Pasteurella haemolytica and Fusobacterium necrophorum. He was instrumental in the development of a highly effective Pasteurella vaccine that has commercially been the number one seller in the United States for many years. His years of work have brought him to be internationally recognized as an authority on bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. The laboratories he supervises provide services to the K-State Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and to practitioners and researchers from around the state and nation. Chengappa also coordinates and teaches a course in veterinary microbiology for sophomore veterinary students.

Before joining K-State's faculty in 1988, Chengappa was an associate professor and head of the Department of Microbiology at Murray State University's Breathitt Veterinary Center. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine and master of veterinary science at the Veterinary College in Bangalore, India. He received his master of science and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He is a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. 

Chengappa received the prestigious Beecham Award for Research Excellence from K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. He is currently on the editorial or advisory boards of several international journals. He holds memberships in a variety of professional organizations including the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Disease and the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association. Chengappa is co-author of two textbooks, one being used in both the United States and around the world. He is author or co-author of more than 120 publications and numerous book chapters and more than 125 abstracts and presentations. He is a patent holder on three works with more pending.
