KARUNA Animal Welfare Association of Karnataka
(Formerly Bangalore SPCA)
The Association was established in 1888 and registered in 1916, with its office at Kasturba Road, Bangalore 560 001 and its Animal shelter located in the Veterinary College Campus, Hebbal, Bangalore 560 024.
The objectives of KARUNA are:
To prevent cruelty to animals and to secure the welfare and proper care of animals in the state of Karnataka and to liaise with other similar organisations in the country and abroad in carrying out work in the interest of animal welfare.
KARUNA is a non-government organisation and runs its operations from public donations which qualify for income tax deductions under Art 80G.
It has the following facilities: an operation theatre, 32 kennels, 5 open kennels, 1 puppy section, 10 large animal sheds, dog runs, aviary, cattery, shelter for other animals and an euthanasia room.
It has ambulatory services with three ambulances for large animals and one for small animals. It also has a separate vehicle for the ABC project.
Some of the other services of Karuna are: night emergency services, Animal Birth control operations, shelter for ownerless animals, boarding kennels and snake care services.
Programmes such as animal Health camps and control of canine rabies, on the spot painting/elocution/essay writing competitions / visits to national parks /formation of KARUNA clubs/ Rural development and animal welfare/ animal health camps etc., are some of KARUNA”S other activities.
