Prof. N.S. Ramaswamy is founder Director of an NGO - Centre for Action, Research and Technology for Man, Animal and Nature - popularly referred to as CARTMAN -, which is engaged in management of livestock and associated systems, modernization of draught animal power, improvements to slaughter houses, establishment of rural based abattoirs, promoting vegetarianism, animal welfare, environmental protection, conservation of ecology and biodiversity, appropriate technology and management for rural development. CARTMAN has developed an Eco Park in a two-acre plot of land. 

Prof. Ramaswamy is also Chairman of Indian Heritage Academy, which conducts regular programmes in yoga, meditation, music, dance, lectures in philosophy and spirituality, etc. He is also Convener of Citizens Forum and Temple of Understanding. 

He was earlier Founder Director of IIM at Bangalore, Director of NITIE at Bombay, Professor of Management in the Bombay University, Chairman of Animal Welfare Board of India, Chairman of Meat Committee, Advisor to Railways and Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Consultant to UN-FAO, UNIDO and UNESCO.
