Prof. (Dr).Rama Kumar, born on 3rd October 1941 at Trivandrum, India, graduated (BVSc degree) from Kerala Agricultural University in 1963 and then obtained his MVSc (1970) and PhD (1978) degrees specializing in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology. In 1999, he did a Certificate Course in Disaster Management from Indira Gandhi Open University, New Delhi. 

After a brief service at the Municipal Corporation, Delhi as Veterinary surgeon during 1964 to 1967, he pursued academic career as Teaching Assistant, Dept. of Surgery, Punjab Agricultural University, Hussar (1969-70) and Lecturer in Surgery (1970-74), Assistant Professor of Surgery (1974-77) and Associate Professor of Surgery (1978-1985) at the Department of Surgery, College of Veterinary Science, Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar. India.

Medicine, Al-Fateh University, Tripoli, Libya (1985-1988). He served as Professor of Surgery and Head, Division of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, S.K. University of Agricultural Science & Technology, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir State during 1989 to 1991.He has published more than 100 scientific papers in journals of national and international repute to his credit besides being a advisor / member of Advisory Committee in MVSc and PhD students and examiner in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology.

The most important assignment in his career was at the Veterinary Council of India; New Delhi as its Secretary (1991 to 2001) and he is well remembered for his rich contributions to streamline veterinary education and accreditation process of the veterinary colleges and introducing the professional regulatory institutions under VCI at the state level. He is an excellent orator and continues to have deep commitment to the veterinary profession even after his retirement. 

Dr. Rama Kumar is also the recipient of the following awards: Senior Fellowship by the C.S.I.R. during the year 1976-78; Dr. R. Swaminatha Iyer Memorial Prize for the best clinical publication of the year-1977 by the Indian Veterinary Association.; Fellow, National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and Lifetime achievement award in Veterinary Surgery awarded by the Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery during the year 2001.

Important assignments taken during the career

1.

Member, Secretary of the Working Group constituted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research to review the curriculum of veterinary colleges. in 1991.

2.

Member of the core Group constituted by Veterinary Council of India to develop draft curriculum for all veterinary colleges in India as part of VCI (Minimum standards of veterinary education) regulation.

3.

Member Secretary, the Education committee of the Veterinary Council of India, from 1991 to 2001.

4.

Initiated and organized a National Symposium on Ethology and Animal Welfare at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar in 1996.

5.

Member Secretary of Curriculum development group, Post Graduate veterinary education and Continuing Veterinary Education (CVE) in India.

6.

Developed a Post Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Ethology and Animal Welfare; 

7.

Advisor to National Zoological Park, in New Delhi.

8.

Resource Person in Strategy Development Group for Zoological Parks of India in the coming millennium organized by the Central Zoo Authority.

9.

Expert Member, Selection Committee of Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment for selection of persons for award of scholarships. 

10.

Technical Member, Fact finding team appointed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests for investigating mass death of tigers in Nandankanan Zoo.

11.

Resource Person for Summer Institute in Veterinary Ethology organized by Indian Veterinary Research Institute 

12.

Co-chairman for a Session on Animal Welfare & Ethics in the Symposium of Austral-Asiaian Association of Animal Production held at New Delhi, 23-29th September 2002. Also delivered a Key Note address for the session on Veterinary Ethology and Animal Welfare: the Indian Perspective.

13.

Resource Person to Kerala Veterinary Association to present the State's perspective of the Cattle Commission.

14.

Resource Person to W.W.F. Kerala, to discuss issues of radical use of Pesticides and insecticides.

15.

Member of executive committee of WWF, Kerala chapter.

16.

Member Secretary of the Working Sub-group on Draught Animal Power, Animal Welfare and Disaster Management constituted by Planning Commission, Government of India. 

17.

Served as an Expert in many committees for the selection of faculty members in various veterinary colleges of India.

18.

Member, Expert Group appointed by I.G.N.O.U., Delhi for development of Distance Learning Programme for veterinary professionals.

19.

Member, the Credential Committee of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (India).
